Beta Mu Sigma was on founded on November 02, 1948, in Charleston, South Carolina. It is chartered as an alumni chapter in the Southeastern Region of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The purpose of this chapter is to further the mission and goals of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. in the greater Charleston, SC region.

Beta Mu Sigma supports two collegiate chapters (Lambda Psi at the College of Charleston and Pi Iota at Charleston Southern University) by directing promising young men into the channels of Sigmadom and in giving financial assistance and guidance. In addition, Beta Mu Sigma sponsors one of the Sigma Beta Clubs to offer unique opportunities for males between the ages of eight and eighteen to exemplify wholesome values, leadership skills, educational enhancement, business training and development, and social and cultural awareness.
